Watering chickens – how to give water correctly and what to avoid
When it comes to keeping chickens, people often think first about feed and eggs, but in reality everything starts with water. Clean, fresh and easily accessible drinking water is one of the most important factors affecting the birds’ health, appetite and egg production.
Why is water so important?
A chicken’s body consists largely of water – the same applies to eggs. Even a few hours without water can cause stress, reduce feed intake and slow down egg laying. That’s why water must always be available – not only during the day, but also at night, when lighting conditions allow it.
- The water quality must be suitable for human consumption – in other words, as clean as the water you drink yourself.

- The optimal water temperature is 10–18 °C.

- Water that is too warm makes the birds sluggish and reduces their desire to drink, while water that is too cold can cause stress.

Which drinking system to choose?
Nipple systems (drip or pressure nipples) are nowadays the most hygienic solution, especially in larger poultry operations.
- It is important to ensure that the pressure is even and that water drips from the nipple easily – not too much and not too little.
 - The height of the nipples must match the size of the birds: the tip of the beak should reach exactly to the nipple, not be too low or too high.

In smaller farms or hobby gardens, open drinkers or trough systems are often used. These are perfectly suitable if cleaned regularly – preferably at least twice a day.
It is important to prevent feed, feathers or droppings from getting into the water, as these will spoil it quickly.

Clean system = healthy birds
Water may look clear, but invisible dirt often hides in the pipes and containers.
Algae, biofilm and sediment must not be allowed to form – they are a breeding ground for pathogens.
In small farms it is recommended to rinse the drinking containers every day.
In large farms with an automatic system, a thorough weekly cleaning with a disinfectant solution is usually sufficient, using only products approved for veterinary use.
Check the water’s clarity, smell and temperature daily, as well as for leaks and pressure. Regular maintenance keeps the system reliable and reduces the risk of disease.
Key points to remember
- Water must always be available and fresh.
 - The drinking system must match the chickens’ age and housing method.
 - Cleaning and inspection are just as important as feed quality.

Good drinking water means healthy and happy birds – and happy birds lay better eggs.
