Pitstop Basis mineral feeder

The feeder is designed to provide supplementary mineral additives in addition to those included in the feed ration.

Dairy cows typically require additional minerals starting about three weeks before calving and up to three months after calving, as during this period they consume less feed than their actual needs.

Strategy for use of the PitstopBASIS feeder

The PitstopBASIS feeder is meant for giving access to extra mineral feed supplements according free-choice principles. Animals are biological beings with individual metabolism and therefore have different needs. Provided that free-choice mineral feed supplements are used, they can to some extent regulate the intake to suit their needs. Examples of strategies for use of the feeder are outlined in the following table:

Target group / Situation Why grouping matters Recommended mineral type or example
Transition cows (3 wk pre- to 3 mo post-calving) High-need cows eat the most; separate if supplements are expensive Natural selenium (close-up dry cows); Yeast + organic trace minerals (fresh milkers)
Disease-prevention for whole herd Not critical; high-need cows still eat the most Same mineral mix as in TMR
Herds without TMR (robot / station concentrates) Not critical Basic broad-spectrum mineral mix
Silage-matched mineral programme Not critical Formula adjusted to silage & basal feeds
Hot-weather salt boost Not critical Salt (free-choice)
Acidosis buffer Not critical Sodium bicarbonate (free-choice buffer)
Heifers, beef calves, suckler cows Usually housed in groups; choose mix for growth, fertility, health Age-/purpose-specific mineral mix
  • The feeder is made of thick, durable and solid HDPE plastic.
  • The plastic parts of the feeder is made of non-toxic materials in accordance with EU’s food hygiene regulations.
  • One feeder serves about 25 cows, access is allowed to only one cow at a time.
  • The feeder is suitable for animals without horns.
  • Frost-resistant, so can be kept outside in winter.
  • The lid with a one-hand operated snap lock opens to the supplements container. Filling is easy with a bucket or a sack.
  • The shape of the feeder, the design – including the feed valve and the top cover, make the feeder closed. The feeder thus protects the nutritional supplements from rain and other water and excrement, keeps the nutritional supplements fresh.
  • The MicroFeeder PitstopBASIS has a mounting bracket that ensures a long life of the feeder.
  • This version should maximally be filled with more than 15 kg / 10 litres of supplements.
  • The feeder comes with the necessary bolts for wall mounting.
  • Dimensions: height 75cm, width 54cm, weight 20kg, depth 67cm.

Placement
The feeder is meant for sideward mounting at a wall or half wall, for instance besides a water trough. It can also be placed on a latticework in a barn or yard, or on a solidly placed, preferably squared iron post or the like, for example a stanchion at the feed table.
The feeder is usually mounted on its left side (to the left when you look towards the eating hole / front flap) using the included mounting bracket / protective frame and mounting kit. The feeder can also be mounted on its right side.

The feeder is normally mounted indoors but can also be placed outdoors.
The decision about placement should consider the ease of filling supplements into the feeder. Filling is easiest if there is a manhole near the feeder.

1.After deciding whether to hang the Pitstop feeder on its left or right side, four holes of 10 mm for the mounting bracket is drilled in the feeder. Punch marks on the sides of the feeder indicate the placement of the holes, but the mounting bracket should be used for control.
2.Using the mounting bracket to mark the positioning of the holes before drilling, drill with a 12 mm concrete drill four holes in the (half) wall. The bottom holes should be about 80 cm above the ground, to make sure the feeder is mounted in a suitable height for dairy cows. The mounting bracket shall be placed horizontal / vertical and fastened with appropriate u bolts to fit the thickness of bars or stanchion. Alternatively, drill four holes in the fencing bars* or stanchion / pole, and correspondingly any needed extra holes in the mounting bracket.
Be aware that the strength of the gratings and stanchions decreases when drilling holes in them.
3.Insert the four dowels into the four drilled holes in the wall. Fasten the mounting bracket with the French screws - remember that the deepest side of the mounting bracket shall turn downwards.Fasten the mounting bracket with 2 u bolts, or alternatively with four bolts (M8, M10 or M12) of suitable length (these are not included with the delivered feeder). Remember that the deepest and broadest side of the mounting bracket must turn downwards.
4.Fasten the feeder to the mounting bracket with the four short bolts. It is important to place the screen washers inside the feeder!! It’s easiest to start by hanging the feeder in the front and top bolt.
5.Mounting of the fodder flap is done with the supplied rod and Starlock caps.
